Miami Building Collapse Live Videos, Images

Shocking video shows the moment a wing of a Miami condo complex collapsed — killing at least one person and leaving several others injured.

The surveillance camera footage shown on CBS 46 shows the ocean-facing portion of the 12-story Champlain Towers South Condo in Surfside cascading into a pile of rubble as a massive cloud of dust fills the air about 1:30 a.m. Thursday.

  • Video captured the moment a wing of a high-rise condo in Florida collapsed on Thursday.
  • The footage, shared by Fox Sports’ Andy Slater, shows part of Champlain Towers South plummets.
  • At least one person was killed in the collapse, and search and rescue efforts are underway.

A fire official said 35 people were rescued from the building, built in 1981, including two who were pulled from the rubble as rescuers using trained dogs continue their search for survivors.

The building about 15 miles north of Miami had 136 units, of which about 80 were occupied, officials said.

“It’s hard to imagine how this could have happened,” Surfside Mayor Charles Burkett told reporters. “Buildings just don’t fall down.”

Scores of firefighters and first responders were at the scene Thursday, and dogs trained to look for people combed through the debris, Surfside Mayor Charles Burkett said. Thunderstorms and lightning complicated the rescue efforts. Miami-Dade Commissioner Sally Heyman said 99 people were unaccounted for. Ten people were listed as injured.

A huge search and rescue effort is underway to find survivors in the wake of the partial collapse of the building in Surfside, Florida.

Video of the collapse showed the sea-facing side of the 12-storey residential building tumble into a pile of rubble and a huge cloud of debris blanket the neighbourhood north of Miami Beach.

Surfside Mayor Charles Burkett confirmed at least one person was killed in the collapse and ten people were treated at the scene.

It is not known how many people were in the building at the time or how many have been injured in total.

Video appears to show building sections come down
Surveillance video obtained by local Fox Sports radio anchor Andy Slater appears to show the collapse: A huge section of the building fell first, followed by another portion about nine seconds later.
A resident on the third floor, Barry Cohen, heard what he thought sounded like an explosion. His apartment was intact, but when he opened his door and tried to leave, he “looked down the hallway … and there was nothing there,” he said.
“It was just a pile of dust, and rubble,” and the building shook as he awaited rescue, Cohen told CNN’s “New Day.”
After about 20 minutes, a rescue crew used a cherry picker to help him, his wife and another resident from a balcony, he said.
